[RAMBLERS] Meeting Minutes, 8/24/2011

Number of Attendees: 21, on the first official meeting of the Fall 2011 semester.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

· Ramblers Meetings are currently held every Wednesday at 5:00 PM in Forbes, Room 307.

· Unless otherwise specified, all hikes depart from the wall by the church on 4th Street and Tyndall Avenue.

PAST HIKES:

· Sounds like Joe's latest black light excursion out to Madera Canyon was a solid success, as he reports that they were "mauled by critters," including glow worms.
· Apparently new Rambler Nathaniel went out to Snoopy Rock in Sedona and highly recommends the locale.
· Ben and Colton went running Wasson Peak and spotted a desert tortoise.
· Steve led a group of eight up to the Samaniego Trail on Mount Lemmon for a half-day hike. Ominous clouds building up all morning, but only a couple drops as the group headed back to the automobiles. Pictures were shown of the wildflowers and baby horny toads that lined the trail.
· Drew showed a lengthy slideshow from the trip he took up to Colorado this past summer. He went up to Great Sand Dunes National Monument and also rambled through the mountains and creeks. Photograph subjects included such sights as a moose, extensive bark-beetle damage, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, mushrooms, the Slumgullion Earthflow, and the badlands of New Mexico, where there apparently lives a little colony of misplaced porcupines.

FUTURE HIKES:
· As of Wednesday, Drew's hike is full, with fifteen Ramblers signed up and five on the waiting list.
· Steve outlined his plans for going up to Hutch's Pool this weekend, taking the tram up to shorten the hike and optimize time spent poolside. Sounds like this one has already filled up as well, which must mean the two-hundred-or-so people we got signed up to the listserv this past Tuesday are starting to make themselves shown. Surprisingly fast, too, especially considering that this trip has the added cost of the $8.00 tram fee.
· This coming Labor Day both Steve and Colton are planning trips. Steve is going to be headed to the Grand Canyon for a week, while Colton is planning some sort of backpacking trip between Friday night and Monday night. Details should be forthcoming.

CLUB BUSINESS:
· Though the official New Members meeting is next week, we did have a solid handful of new Ramblers attend this week's meeting, so we all gave introductions and shared our favorite ice cream flavors. Ben Lewis demands it be condiments next week, as per...well, tradition, I guess.
· Juliana brought some delicious banana and chocolate nut bread (forgot the proper name here) to share at the meeting. My sincerest apologies also for not mentioning the unbelievable, mind-blowing cream cheese and berry brownies that she whipped up for last week's meeting.
· If you are ever in need of some basic gear, then you should make sure and get in touch with Ben Smith at one of the meetings. The club has a fair share of equipment available for those of you who may be new to backpacking or whatever. In fact, we would be interested in finding a new Gear Warden if you have a little extra space at your place to store our boxes. If you would be interested in volunteering then, once again, get in touch with Ben.
· We'll also be holding Club Officer elections in two weeks time, and accepting nominations next week.

Meeting adjourned.

Until next week,
