GENERAL INFORMATION:
· Ramblers Meetings are currently held every Wednesday at 5:00 PM in Forbes, Room 307.
· Unless otherwise specified, all hikes depart from the low wall by the church on 4th Street and Tyndall Avenue.
PAST HIKES:
· Lenny went to Red River Creek with Maria. They not only had trouble finding camping sites but the trip ended with them having to carry an overheated dog back out in a blanket. Insert "hot dog and bun" joke here.
· Last Saturday Steve led a twenty mile (approx.) hike from the Sabino Canyon Visitor's Center to about halfway up the Palisades. They left at 5:00 in the morning, got there a little before noon, and lounged around at the pools until about 3:00 in the afternoon, at which point they headed back down just in time to catch a beautiful sunset. Steve notes that despite the three-thousand-foot elevation gain, the amount of switchbacks on the trail prevented things from ever getting too steep. The water above the main pool was crystal clear, and they saw all sorts of frogs, spiders and snakes. They even caught a glimpse of a Bufo toad down by the Visitor's Center.
· Ben B. showed pictures from Colorado or, more specifically, from the highest mountain peak in Colorado, Mount Elbert. Him and some acquaintances went up to collect plants from the very top, braving some large-albeit-supposedly-friendly clouds. They went up the steep south side then down a different route, seeing mushrooms, aspens, marmots, and some very noisy pikas.
FUTURE HIKES:
· Steve is leading a trip to Samaniego Trail on Mount Lemmon this weekend, starting at the top and going down a couple thousand feet. Check out his recent Listserv post to learn more about what should be a great B-level trip to help kick off your hiking semester.
· A few more people have posted hikes to the upcoming hike flier (which is currently circulating on the Listserv as a Google document), meaning we already have a pretty solid schedule for the first half of this upcoming semester! There's all sorts of different trips planned, including a newly listed trip to Tumamoc Hill with Grant on October 15. Check out the Google file or keep an eye out for the upcoming fliers.
· Ben B. would also like to remind everyone that on October 21st through 22nd is the 2011 Bioblitz in Saguaro Park.
CLUB BUSINESS:
· The Club Fair is next Tuesday! At this point we have enough people signed up to man the Ramblers booth from open to close, but if you'd like to sign up or even just come hang around, you are more than welcome (more the merrier). If anyone has any gear or chairs that they'd like to bring along to set up at the booth, those would also be very much appreciated.
· Hanna is interested in setting up another Gear Workshop, but she'd like to know if people are interested and, if so, what time would work best. If somebody else is willing to actually host the workshop, she would also be more than willing to help out in coordinating the event and setting things up, etc. Contact her at hannacoy@gmail.com
· Ben S. reports that he has a "semblance of a plan" for the funding and equipment deal discussed in meeting a few months back. Keep posted for updates.
· The New Members Meeting will take place the week after the Club Fair, or August 31. After a thrilling display of democracy in action, it was decided to try and organize it in the eastern courtyard of Forbes (enclosed area with grass and vines and whatnot) so as to accommodate what we hope will be a large showing of new members. After pizza and socializing, we'll move whoever remains back into Room 307 in order to show photographs and acclimate people to our usual meeting procedures, etc. Ben Smith has also suggested compiling a slide show out of current members' best Ramblers hiking pictures. If you have any you'd like included in the slide show, you should submit a maximum of five to Ben at smithb08@email.arizona.edu. Be sure to include a short description and be at the New Members Meeting so that you can say a few words (emphasis on the few, we're probably going to have a lot of these photographs to show) about whatever trip you're showing off. In fact, it would be really great if you submitted photos of locations listed in the upcoming hikes flier!
· Elections are also coming up! We'll be taking nominations at the New Members Meeting and then have the actual election the following week. Alright, I think that covers everything...
