GENERAL INFORMATION:
· Ramblers Meetings are currently held every Wednesday at 5:00 PM in Forbes, Room 307.
· Unless otherwise specified, all hikes depart from the wall by the church on 4th Street and Tyndall Avenue.
PAST HIKES:
· Joe and five other Ramblers went up to Peppersauce, a "rich riparian habitat" that Joe really dug. The road from there to Rice Peak was reportedly all scrub, and overall Hoe was less than impressed with the higher-elevation terrain. This was something of an exploratory trip, and even though the Peak was a disappointment, the lower regions proved very popular. They report sycamores of "enormous calliber" and a large network of crisscrossing fire access roads. They were overrun by insects of all sorts.
· Drew went to Madera Canyon last Sunday and brought in a lot of photos courtesy of Ben Blonder. This was an eight mile, 2000 ft elevation gain trip and basically consisted of a big circle. They report back "good fungus" and lots of insects and plants captured in close-up by Ben's amazing camera. They came across a lot of delicious prickly pear and yucca fruits, and Drew reports a lot of tomatillo plants growing in the area. As an aside, Joe recalled that his "sister used to play the sax-a-frass," or something to that effect.
· Roxama went to Agua Caliente with four other folks, where they found a "horse lover" and a perfect saguaro caactus.
FUTURE HIKES:
· Colton announced the "Return of the Superstitions: The Reavis Ranch Edition," which, as the name implies, is another trip up to the Superstitions for backpacking. A different area this time, though, on the opposite side of the mountains. The group may check out some indian ruins (or rock piles, but either way) and possibly hit a welcome cold front. This trip is looking to run about eighteen to twenty miles overall.
· Joe's leading a trip to Davidson Canyon, and like most of Joe's trips this one promises to be "flat and smooth". It'll be "hiking ecstasy," Joe assures us all. This will be going down on Sunday and, needless to say, Joe is excited to get back to "the riparian corridor".
· On Saturday Steve is heading out to Oasis Pools for swimming and wildflowers. Should be a B-level hike.
CLUB BUSINESS:
· Ben Smith has gotten some of the requested $2,700 worth of gear from ASUA, or more specifically: 9 sleeping pads, 4 tents, 1 sleeping bag, and 5 tarps. Let Ben know if you want to check out some of the gear, and as a heads up know that we've recently established an optional $5 donation for renting gear. Though $5 ain't free, it's still a pretty solid deal considering the gear that you're getting.
· In two or three weeks Drew will be arranging for an Ironwood National Monument spokeswoman to come down and talk to us about volunteer opportunities. Stay tuned.
· We may also have folks from No Mas Muertos coming into to speak later on in the semester.
· The idea was thrown around to organize another past-Ramblers get-together and history session, but this is still in the hypothetical stages.
· Ben Smith reminds the Ramblers that Beanfest is coming up, a sort of climber's meet-up/party over at Cochise Stronghold. Get in touch with him at one of the upcoming meetings if you are interested in getting some more information on this one.
