Number of Attendees: 39, though there may have been some folks in the doorway I missed. Man, another crowded meeting - and there wasn't even pizza.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
· Ramblers Meetings are currently held every Wednesday at 5:00 PM in Forbes, Room 307.
· Unless otherwise specified, all hikes depart from the wall by the church on 4th Street and Tyndall Avenue.
Introductions were handed around, giving Ben Lewis the chance to finally ask everybody their favorite condiments.
PAST HIKES:
· Though Colton was not at the meeting, there were a lot of pictures taken during the weekend backpacking trip to Mount Baldy that he led this past Labor Day. Sounds like everybody had a great time on what I think was the first official backpacking trip of the semester. Temperatures weren't too bad, though it apparently got a little cold for some. Interesting extra: the group saw the wreckage of an old Navy Hellcat.
· Roxana had nine Ramblers attend her hike up Mount Wrightson, though one hung back at the saddle. They went up from Madera and had a great time.
· Charles brought in a fast-paced slideshow from his Whitney expedition. Sounds like he ended up doing this one sans Ramblers, though several people professed regret at not having been able to attend. From the photographs he brought in, that's a pretty understandable sentiment. The weather was perfect, with hardly any wind to speak of, and Charles got some photographs of the local trout and...fat mountain beavers.
· Steve and Hanna spent the bulk of last week in the Grand Canyon. He says it was hot, but that the canyons were pretty wet and the water extraordinarily clear. He's in the process of getting some slides developed from the trip, so hopefully by next week's meeting we have some photographic evidence. Be there to hear more.
FUTURE HIKES:
· Ben Smith is leading a hike this Sunday to Atascosa Peak, but this one is full. Should be "pretty pretty," says Ben.
· Will's Hugh Norris hike is also full. Please excuse the following awkward paragraph break that I can't seem to get rid of, no matter how hard I try.
· Roxana is planning on posting a Lemmon Pools hike for this Saturday, though there is the possibility of rain. Keep your eyes peeled to the Listserv.
· The Pancake Breakfast has been postponed by Juliana until further notice. She is still looking for a location, so if you're willing to host this then get in touch with her at one of the meetings.
· Steve just posted a hike to the Palisades, taking place this Saturday. Better sign up quick for this one, cause hikes have been filling up pretty fast recently. In fact, Steve passed around a signup sheet at the meeting to give attending Ramblers the first shot at scoring a place on this one. Another incentive to come to meetings, though I'm honestly not sure how many more Ramblers we're going to be able to squeeze into Room 307!
CLUB BUSINESS:
· Ben announces a club roster of over eight hundred people.
· This week the club held Officer Elections, with the following nominees (nicknames got more elaborate as the proceedings progressed):
President: Juliana "Cake"
Vice President: Nathaniel "Pudder" (?) and Mario "Eagle Eye"
Treasurer: Simon "Swimming With the Fishy Business Experience" and Jeff "The Old Man With the Check at the Grocery Store"
Each candidate gave a brief speech and outlined why they thought they were right for the job, then voting commenced. Juliana won the President's position (or "El Jeffé," as pronounced by Ben Lewis and spelled by Ben Smith) by default, making her attempt at culinary bribery ultimately unnecessary. Inexact elections were held for the other two positions, with Eagle Eye winning the Vice President's chair and The Old Man With the Check at the Grocery Store scoring the job of Club Treasurer. Congratulations to all involved! The transition to new club officers will take place over the next few weeks.
· Ben Smith got ambitious. Really ambitious. In fact, he wrote up an elaborate and highly detailed letter to ASUA detailing why the Ramblers club deserves money. Included was an itemized, comprehensive list of needed gear, mostly women's equipment as discussed by the club a couple of months back. A round of applause for Ben's hard work here, especially as it's something that he's been wanting to do for a long time now.
· Finally, Will exhibited a new website design courtesy of Josh, and it looks excellent. He also reminded members new and old about the Hike Blog on the website.
